Projects > In November

On Thanksgiving Day 2007 I traveled from Ithaca, NY to Niagara Falls, Canada. Always drawn to bodies of water and displays of nature's power, I presumed I'd have an altering experience with the falls. I found a rainy, cold, off-season theme park with a system of roads and sidewalks designed to limit unpaid access to the falls.

The gaudy strip along Victoria Avenue and Clifton Hill seemed dull in the grey light despite the flashing signs of nearly empty attractions. But a few blocks away in the residential and commercial districts I found the sublime and paradoxical in structures and landscapes. These photographs express a struggle between the present and absent, the possible and impossible, the familiar and foreign, loneliness and connection.
